Signal Generators - Frequency Counters

Signal generation and frequency counting play an important role in test and measurement.  These products enable users to simulate behavior in devices under test, as well as determine the speed of a signal.  Waveform generation is possible in several formats, from standard electronic waveform shapes, to AM and FM radio signals.

Function generator
Function generators are used to create waveforms of user selected shape and frequency.  Many standard waveform shapes are available, including sine, square, triangle and many more.  Users simply select the desired shape and frequency on the unit's front panel, and waveforms are passed to the device being tested.

Arbitrary waveform generators add a unique functionality, being able to generate signals beyond usual, standard shapes.  These machines enable the creation of custom waveforms - they can be user programmed, or the replication of a previous, recorded condition.

Frequency Counter
Frequency counters are used to record the amount of times an event occurs in a given period of time.  Recorded events include electronic oscillations and waveforms, with the number of occurances typically measured in hertz (Hz).

In choosing a frequency counter, there are several areas to consider.  First would be the frequency range you need to measure.  Extremely fast signals may be beyond the scope of standard units and could necessitate specialized equipment.  Second, the resolution indicates how small of a measurement the counter can make.  Frequency counters are capable of making extremely finite measurements.  The resolution needed would be dictated by the type of tests being conducted.  Further considerations include connectivity options to computers and other test equipment, as well as built in measurement functions such as rise/fall time and duty cycle.

RF Signal Generator, AM/FM Signal Generation
RF signal generators generate continuous radio waves for use in research and troubleshooting of RF components.  AM/FM signal generators are the next progression in this product category, enabling AM and FM modulation of the signal.
